Zero Waste Lunch Volunteers

Thanks for your interest in our zero waste program! We need your help keeping the program running so that we can divert all the food scraps from the landfill.  You'd be surprised how much we generate in just one lunch period!

We will have some very enthusiastic 4th and 5th grade student volunteers helping out but it would be great if they had some adult support. Please consider signing up for a spot or two (or as many as you like!) so that we can continue to significantly reduce the school's landfill waste whilst bringing about positive change.   Bonus, it's super easy and you get to see your child at lunchtime too!

If you're new to this, one of our team will be in contact but it's really just overseeing the process and directing the students to the compost, recycling and landfill bins that will have signs and visual cues. At no point will you be asked to touch trash or clean up spills.

Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. If you have any questions please let me know (jamie_N_smith@hotmail.com). Thank you!

Zero Waste Lunch Packing Tips

Here are some ways to pack a great lunch with less waste…..

  • Use a divided lunch box like a bento box, or reusable snack bags.
  • Encourage your child to bring home empty plastic baggies that can we be washed and re-used.  You wouldn’t believe the amount of plastic baggies that end up in the landfill bin every day!
  • Add reusable cutlery, even one reusable straw makes a difference.
  • Use a thermos for soups, hot food and beverages.
  • Beeswax wraps can replace tons of plastic wrap each year. Beejou and etee wraps are great. They make great fire-starters when they’re no longer usable!
  • Buy a brick of cheese and cube it at home or cut your own cheese sticks.
  • Buy a large bag of chips or other snacks and portion out what you need each day in a cute reusable snack bag. Many parents like, Planet Wise, Fluf and Bumkins bags. Most stores now sell these, so they are readily available.
  • Try making your own granola bars, there are lots of great no-bake recipes that kids can help with. This will save money and ditch the wrapper. Tons of gluten free and nut free options.
